This blue light can easily penetrate through the layers of the skin, reaching the dermis and damaging the delicate blood vessels and capillaries that lie just below the surface. As a result, these blood vessels can become more visible, leading to a darker appearance under the eyes. 

Expert Trick to Remove Dark Circles

Alof shares his trick to treating dark circles: “Use a cold teabag compress to treat dark circles and prevent further damage caused by the stresses of screen time. This strategy is easy to incorporate into your nightly routine and inexpensive enough to do it often.”

Here’s how to do it in seven easy steps: 

  1. Steep the Teabags—Start by steeping the teabags in hot water for about 5 minutes. This will allow the tea to fully bloom and make its beneficial compounds available.
  2. Remove and Cool the Teabags—Once the teabags have steeped, remove them from the hot water and let them cool down. “Place them in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes or put them in the fridge for about 10 minutes if time is of the essence,” recommends Alof. 
  3. Cleanse Your Face—While the teabags are cooling, cleanse your face with a mild cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup residue that may be contributing to your dark circles.
  4. Squeeze Out Excess Liquid—Once the teabags have cooled, remove them from the cold water and gently squeeze out any excess liquid. Alof adds, “You want them to be damp but not dripping.”
  5. Place the Teabags on Your Eyes—Lie down and place the cooled teabags over your eyes. Make sure they cover the area under your eyes where you have dark circles. Relax and leave the teabags on for about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Massage the Area—After the 10-15 minutes are up, gently massage the area under your eyes with your fingers. “This will help to improve circulation and promote lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness and darkness,” says Alof. 
  7. Rinse Your Face—Remove the teabags and rinse your face with cold water. The water’s lower temperature will help tighten and refresh the fatigued skin. 

Bonus Expert Tips to Reduce Dark Circles

As someone who has spent much of his life sitting in front of screens, Alof has discovered plenty of tips for reducing dark circles. Here are some of them:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help reduce puffiness under the eyes. “Dehydration can cause blood vessels under the eyes to dilate and create a dark appearance,” stresses Al. 
  • Take short screen breaks. Staring at a screen can strain your eyes and lead to fatigue, which can contribute to the appearance of dark circles. 
  • Lack of sleep can contribute to under-eye circles, as it can cause the skin to appear paler and blood vessels to become more visible. “Aim for at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep to allow your body to rejuvenate and reduce the appearance of dark circles,” recommends Al. 
  • Practice good skincare by cleansing and moisturizing your face every day to improve blood circulation. Use an eye cream specifically designed to brighten and hydrate the delicate skin under the eyes.
  • Wear blue-light glasses to help reduce strain on the eyes caused by digital screens. This will encourage more focus and reduce the likelihood of dark circles.
